The town is located 4 miles by road from Blackburn. Its major development came in the 19th century through it manufacturing. In the mid-1800’s the town had three print-works and a number of cotton mills along with extensive dying plants and several large chemical works. It population in 1851 was 7,481 which had grown to 13,872 by 1861.
